Intermittent Fasting and Brain Health: Does It Reduce Alzheimer's Risk?

4 min read

For those of us over 40, the conversation about health shifts. It is no longer just about the scale or the speed of a 5K. It becomes about longevity. It becomes about the legacy of our minds. The fear of cognitive decline: of losing the memories that define who we are: is a quiet weight many carry. But at LOVE JOY RUN, we believe that aging is not a process of slowing down, but an opportunity to build resilience.

Recent science suggests that one of the most powerful tools for protecting your brain might not be a pill, but a pattern: Intermittent Fasting (IF).

We are diving into the science of how fasting impacts brain health, its potential to reduce Alzheimer’s risk, and how it fits into a lifestyle of movement and purpose.

Education That Turns Into Action: What is Intermittent Fasting?

At its core, intermittent fasting is not a "diet" in the traditional sense. It is a scheduled pattern of eating and not eating. For the active adult in Tampa or Lakeland balancing a career and family, IF offers a simple framework: you shorten the window of time in which you consume calories, allowing your body extended periods of rest.

This is Pillar 6 of our wellness philosophy: Education That Turns Into Action. Understanding the "why" behind the "what" is what keeps us consistent when the journey gets tough.

The Science of a Sharper Mind

When you step away from the kitchen for 12, 16, or 24 hours, something profound happens under the surface. Your body stops focusing on digestion and starts focusing on repair. For the brain, this is revolutionary.

1. Autophagy: The Cellular Cleanup

Think of your brain like a high-performance engine. Over time, "cellular junk": misfolded proteins like beta-amyloid: can accumulate. In Alzheimer’s disease, these proteins clump together to form plaques that disrupt communication between neurons.

Intermittent fasting triggers a process called autophagy. Derived from the Greek for "self-eating," autophagy is your body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells to make room for newer, healthier ones. By extending your fasting window, you give your brain the time it needs to sweep away the debris that could lead to cognitive decline.

2. BDNF: "Miracle-Gro" for Your Neurons

Fasting has been shown to increase the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Researchers often call BDNF "Miracle-Gro" for the brain. It supports the survival of existing neurons and encourages the growth of new ones.

Higher levels of BDNF are associated with improved learning, better memory, and increased resistance to neurodegenerative diseases. When you combine the metabolic stress of a fast with the physical stress of a Training Run Club session, you are essentially doubling down on your brain's growth potential.

3. The Ketone Shift

When glucose (sugar) runs low during a fast, your liver begins to produce ketones from stored fat. Ketones are a highly efficient fuel source for the brain. Unlike glucose, which can cause inflammatory "spikes," ketones provide a steady, clean energy source that protects neurons from oxidative stress.

Movement is Medicine: The Synergy of Fasting and Fitness

In our community, we live by Pillar 1: Movement is Medicine. But medicine is most effective when the environment is right.

Practicing intermittent fasting can improve insulin sensitivity: a major factor in Alzheimer’s prevention. When your body processes insulin efficiently, it reduces systemic inflammation, which is a primary driver of brain aging.

Whether you are joining us for a sunrise run along the Tampa Riverwalk or a community jog through the trails of Lakeland, moving in a fasted or semi-fasted state can help teach your body to become "metabolically flexible." This means your body can switch between burning sugar and burning fat with ease, keeping your energy levels stable and your mind clear.

Starting Where You Are: The "Forever Pace"

You don’t need to jump into a 24-hour fast tomorrow. In fact, we advise against it. At LOVE JOY RUN, we value Consistency Over Intensity (Pillar 3).

The most sustainable way to approach IF and brain health is to find your "Forever Pace": a rhythm you can maintain for the rest of your life.

  • The 12:12 Lead-In: Start by simply stopping all food intake at 7:00 PM and not eating again until 7:00 AM.

  • The 16:8 Standard: Once you're comfortable, push your first meal to 11:00 AM. This 16-hour window is often cited in studies as a "sweet spot" for triggering autophagy and BDNF production.

  • Walk Before You Run: If you are new to lifestyle changes, our Walk Run Go program is the perfect way to integrate movement while you adjust your nutritional timing.

Community + Accountability: Don't Go It Alone

Changing your lifestyle is hard. Changing your lifestyle alone is nearly impossible. Pillar 5 is Community + Accountability.

The journey to preventing Alzheimer's and improving metabolic health isn't just about what you eat or how fast you run; it’s about who you have in your corner. In our community discussion groups, we share the struggles of the first few days of fasting and the triumphs of a clear-headed morning run.

We believe that purposeful living is a team sport. When you show up for the group, you're more likely to show up for yourself.

The Statement Back

Your brain is your most valuable asset. It holds your stories, your wisdom, and your capacity to love. Protecting it requires more than luck; it requires the discipline to choose habits that serve your future self. Intermittent fasting isn't about deprivation: it's about liberation. It's about freeing your body to do what it was designed to do: heal, repair, and endure.

Every step you take on the pavement and every hour you give your body to rest is an investment in a future where you remain sharp, strong, and present.

Take the next step in your longevity journey.
